Welcome To Our Guesthouse is het kloppende hart van Productiehuis Theater Rotterdam. Vanaf 4 oktober stellen wij vier weken lang ons huis helemaal ten dienste van vier veelbelovende makers die nog onder de radar van het grote publiek zijn gebleven. Makers die affiniteit hebben met Rotterdam en waarvan wij vinden dat ons publiek ze moet leren kennen. De kunstenaars onderzoeken, creëren en maken in de zalen van Theater Rotterdam en in de stad. Aan het einde van dit proces testen ze hun work-in-progress op het publiek tijdens de vier presentatiedagen van 3 t/m 6 november.

De uitgenodigde makers voor deze editie zijn: Jihan Imago, Lucia Fernandez Santoro, Sue-Ann Bel en last but not least Tools for Action + Floor. Naast deze moedige makers verwelkomen we Mathieu Charles terug, maar nu in de rol van gastcurator.

Tijdens deze editie nemen ze ons mee op reis door RÆV rehearsals, claimen ze de openbare ruimte terug en laten ze zien hoe een schreeuw door het lichaam reist. Van physical storytelling tot droommachine tot opblaasbare objecten: ze zullen wat meer Licht laten schijnen in de Duisternis! Wees welkom en be our guest!

Illumination in Darkness

Nu de natuurlijke verlichting van het directe zonlicht dat we als mens ervaren afneemt, naderen we een nieuwe editie van ons artist-in-residence programma Welcome To Our Guesthouse. Tijdens deze editie, met het overkoepelende thema Illumination in Darkness, richten we ons op de onderling verbonden aard van onze acties, reacties en beslissingen en de verschillende effecten die daaruit voortvloeien. 

We willen de functie van de natuurlijke fenomenen licht en duisternis in ons dagelijks leven onderzoeken en de voorwaarden in vraag stellen die voor een groot deel bepalen hoe we werken, kunst maken en leven: waarom hebben we zowel duisternis als licht nodig? Hoe kunnen we onze tijdelijke omgeving voorstellen en transformeren in een door licht en duisternis geweven sociaal systeem, op basis van onderlinge verbondenheid, erkenning en zorg? 

We stellen deze kernvragen in ons huidige gedeelde moment. Aangezien we allemaal tot verschillende takken van een groter podiumkunstenlandschap behoren, zullen we binnen ons programma samenwerken om onze focus en acties te combineren en onze toekomstperspectieven te vergroten.

Vanaf dit startpunt zetten we ons huis volledig de hele maand oktober 2021 in voor makers en hun communities die grensoverschrijdend denken, zowel geografisch als artistiek. Het is ook een uitnodiging aan het publiek om kennis te maken met de zorgvuldige en inspirerende processen van kunstenaars die maatschappelijke betrokkenheid hoog in het vaandel hebben staan.

Welcome To Our Guesthouse wordt mede mogelijk gemaakt door ACT, een Europees samenwerkingsproject rond ecologie, klimaatverandering en sociale transitie. In een tijdperk van klimaatafbraak, massale uitsterving en toenemende ongelijkheid, bundelen we onze krachten in een project over hoop, waarbij verbindingen tussen brede perspectieven en lokale initiatieven centraal staan.

Four makers, four inspiring concepts, four research weeks and four presentation days, that's Welcome To Our Guesthouse #5!

Welcome To Our Guesthouse is the beating heart of Productiehuis Theater Rotterdam. Starting October 4 we will be fully putting our house at the service of promising theatre makers, who have remained under the radar of the general public, with this artist-in-residence program. Makers who have an affinity with Rotterdam and who, we believe, our audience should get to know. The artists research, create and make in the several locations of Theater Rotterdam and in the city. At the end of this process, they test their work-in-progress on the public during the four presentation days from 3 to 6 November.

The invited makers for this edition are: Jihan Imago, Lucia Fernandez Santoro, Sue-Ann Bel and last but not least Tools for Action + Floor. Besides these courageous makers, we will be welcoming back Mathieu Charles as guest curator.

During this edition they will bring us on a journey through RÆV rehearsals, claim back the public space and let us witness how a scream travels through the body. From physical storytelling to a dream machine and inflatable objects. They will shed a bit more light in Darkness! Feel welcome and be our Guest!

Illumination in Darkness

As the natural illumination from direct sunlight that we as human beings experience diminishes, we approach a new edition of our artists-in-residence program Welcome To Our Guesthouse. During this edition, with the overarching theme Illumination in Darkness, we focus on the interconnected nature of our actions, responses and decisions, and the different impacts that they cause. 

We aim to examine the function of the natural phenomena light and darkness in our daily life and question the conditions that control to a large extend how we work, create art and live: why we need Darkness as well as Light? How to imagine our temporary environment and transform it into a social system, weaved by light and darkness and based on interconnectedness, acknowledgements and care? We propose those key questions in our current shared moment. Considering we all belong to different branches of a larger performance art community, we will work together within our programme to combine our focuses and actions and to expand our future perspectives.

From this starting point, and for the whole month of October 2021, we dedicate our house entirely to makers and their communities who think across borders, both geographically and artistically. It is also an invitation to the public to get acquainted with the careful and inspiring processes of artists who value social engagement. 

Welcome To Our Guesthouse is part of ACT (Art, Climate, Transition); a European cooperation project on ecology, climate change and social transition. In an era of climate breakdown, pandemics, mass extinction and growing inequalities, we join our forces by connecting broad perspectives with specific, localised possibilities that invite or demand that we ACT.
