Bij de viering van het honderdjarige bestaan van het Koreaanse theater in 2008 besefte de Zuid-Koreaanse theatermaker / componist Jaha Koo dat zijn land eigenlijk geen eigen theatertraditie kent. Die is namelijk sterk bepaald door de Westerse canon. Maar waarom zijn zijn landgenoten zo trots op deze Westerse invulling? Waarom blijft iedereen altijd maar naar Shakespeare verwijzen?
Vanuit deze en meer vragen over traditie, authenticiteit en zelfcensuur denkt Koo na over de toekomst van zijn land. En daar wil je bij zijn, want Koo creëert live op de speelvloer een compleet eigen mix van objecttheater, multimediale performance en familiegeschiedenis. Met een sprekende rijstkoker, een zelfgecomponeerde soundscape en duizelingwekkende projecties van het leven in Korea.
The History of Korean Western Theatre is het derde deel van een trilogie, waarin Jaha Koo met veel aandacht voor detail persoonlijke verhalen verweeft met historische, politieke en sociologische feiten. De eerdere delen, Lolling & Rolling en Cuckoo, waren respectievelijk gericht op het verleden en het heden van Zuid-Korea. In dit derde deel kijkt Koo naar de toekomst. Hij wil jongere generaties Zuid-Koreanen aansporen deze zelf vorm te geven, vanuit een heldere blik op het verleden.
Jaha Koo (1984) studeerde theaterwetenschappen aan de Korea National University of Arts en voltooide de master DasArts in Amsterdam. Hij woont en werkt in België. In zijn multimediale werk combineert hij muziek, videomateriaal, tekst en installatie. Een belangrijk thema in het werk van Koo is de clash tussen Oost en West en de impact daarvan op de persoonlijke levens van mensen.

The History of Korean Western Theatre is a documentary performance that studies the influence of European theatre tradition on Korean theatre.
At the centenary of Korean theatre in 2008, the South-Korean theatre maker / composer Jaha Koo realised his country really didn’t have a theatre tradition of its own. Because Korean theatre is strongly influenced by the western canon. But why are his fellow countrymen so proud of this westernized interpretation? Why does everybody always keep referring to Shakespeare?
These and more questions about tradition, authenticity and self-censorship have prompted Koo to think about the future of his country. And you’ll want to be there, because Koo transforms the stage with a completely unique live mix of object theatre, multimedia performance and family history. With a talking rice cooker, a soundscape he wrote himself, and dazzling screen projections of life in Korea.
The History of Korean Western Theatre is the third instalment of a trilogy, in which Jaha Koo weaves an intricate mesh of personal stories and historical, political and sociological facts. The first two parts, Lolling & Rolling and Cuckoo, focused on South Korea’s past and present, respectively. In this third part, Koo is looking towards the future. He empowers the youngest generation of South Koreans to take their future into their own hands, based on a clear understanding of the past.
Jaha Koo (1984) holds a degree in theatre studies from Korea National University of Arts and completed the DasArts master programme in Amsterdam. He lives and works in Belgium. In his work he combines music, video material, text and installation art. A major theme in Koo’s work is the clash between East and West and the impact this has on people’s personal lives.
