TAO Dance Theater is creating two new works within its Series of Numbers, with 16 and 17 forming one complete performance together. As the series continues to evolve, these new pieces deepen the study of bodily movement and enrich the technique of circular motion. They explore the infinite possibilities of “instant change” emerging from a visual language that “follows the laws of inertia” in the artistic exploration of Eastern physicality.
16 is the fifteenth work in choreographer Tao Ye’s Numerical Series. Inspired by the traditional Chinese Loong (dragon) dance, it features a curved line of 16 dancers who move and gesture to transmit energy from beginning to end. Through dynamic use of space, the dancers move like a dragon: their spines drilling, passing, following, twisting, and undulating to guide their arms and legs in a dance harmonized with the body’s center of gravity. Since 2024 is the Year of the Dragon in China, 16 explores the suppleness of Eastern physicality, aspiring to bring good fortune for the new year.
17, the sixteenth work in the Numerical Series, connects to 7 and continues the experiment between sound and bodily movement. The concept arises from a visual language formed through tonal motion, whose fluctuations and linear progressions are both auditory and physical. Seventeen dancers scatter and regroup in seemingly chaotic ways. Every movement is accompanied by sound: collapsing with “hm”, suppression with “ng”, and surprise with “ah”… As the movements are always synchronized with the sounds, a counterpoint interplay between two languages emerges. This leads to a multitude of mixed and unconventional relationships. The resonance between sound and physicality aims to evoke profound dramatic and theatrical effects.
16 is het vijftiende werk uit de Numerical Series van choreograaf Tao Ye. Geïnspireerd door de traditionele Chinese Loong-dans (drakendans) toont het een gebogen lijn van 16 dansers die bewegen en gebaren om energie over te dragen van begin tot eind. Via een dynamisch gebruik van de ruimte bewegen de dansers als een draak: hun ruggengraten boren, passeren, volgen, draaien en kronkelen om hun armen en benen te sturen in een dans die in harmonie is met het zwaartepunt van het lichaam. Omdat 2024 in China het Jaar van de Draak is, onderzoekt 16 de lenigheid van oosterse lichamelijkheid, met de hoop om geluk te brengen voor het nieuwe jaar.
17, het zestiende werk uit de Numerical Series, sluit aan op 7 en zet het experiment voort tussen klank en lichaamsbeweging. Het concept komt voort uit de beeldtaal die ontstaat door tonale beweging, waarvan de fluctuaties en lineaire voortgang zowel auditief als fysiek zijn. 17 dansers verspreiden zich en komen weer samen op ogenschijnlijk chaotische wijze. Geluiden begeleiden elke beweging: vallen met “hm”, onderdrukking met “ng” en verrassing met “ah”… Omdat de bewegingen altijd synchroon lopen met de klanken, ontstaat een spel tussen twee talen in contrapunt. Dit leidt tot een veelheid aan gemengde en onconventionele relaties. De resonantie tussen geluid en lichamelijkheid wil diepgaande dramatische en theatrale effecten oproepen.
