SOUNDS is a physical ode to the power of music — to sounds that are not only heard, but felt throughout the body. Choreographer and artistic director Donna Chittick weaves Caribbean rhythms, African influences, and hiphop into a vibrant, multidimensional experience where dance, music, and energy merge. She takes the audience on a personal journey back to her roots in Sint Maarten, where music is not just something to hear, but something to feel.
"We show the exchange between bodies and sound," says Donna. "What does music do to your body? To your emotions? How do you respond to that energy?"
Four dancers and a singer bring a familiar, culturally rooted energy to the stage — the kind of rhythms and movements that you know from home, that are in your body even before you can name them. Soca, konpa, and African sounds emerge from identity, memory, and community. Movements are instinctive, fueled by rhythms that resonate with their heritage, memories, and life energy. Music becomes visible, tangible, and palpable through light, vibration, and pure physical expression.
SOUNDS is also a celebration of Afro-Caribbean heritage. It honors music as a source of joy, connection, and resistance. The performance resonates with the power of generations — before, during, and after the Transatlantic slave trade — showing how sound carries heritage, shapes identities, and unites communities.
The work demonstrates how music and movement form identity and travel through time and society. It is not a stylistic exercise, but a source of meaning, memory, and strength.
BackBone ensures the experience is accessible to both hearing and deaf or hard-of-hearing audiences, using vibration bands, rhythmic lighting, and movement-based cues: music as a universal language.

“We tonen de uitwisseling tussen lichamen en geluid,” vertelt Donna. “Wat doet muziek met je lijf? Met je emoties? Wat doe je met die energie?”
Vier dansers en een zangeres brengen een vertrouwde, cultureel doorleefde energie het podium op met de soort ritmes en bewegingen die je van huis uit kent, die in je lijf zitten nog vóór je ze kunt benoemen. Soca, konpa en Afrikaanse geluiden komen uit identiteit, herinneringen en community. Bewegingen ontstaan instinctief, gevoed door ritmes die resoneren met hun afkomst, herinneringen en levensenergie. Muziek wordt zichtbaar, voelbaar en tastbaar gemaakt, in licht, vibratie en pure fysieke expressie.
SOUNDS is ook een viering van Afro-Caribisch erfgoed. Het viert muziek als bron van vreugde, verbinding en verzet. De voorstelling echoot de kracht van generaties vóór, tijdens en na de Trans-Atlantische slavernij, en laat zien hoe klank erfgoed draagt, identiteiten vormt en gemeenschappen verbindt.
