Three third-generation Indonesian artists explore their family histories in an effort to break the generations-long “Indo silence.” How does this hidden past continue to shape their lives today? And how can they, as third-generation artists, express what it truly means to be Indo? The short documentary Indisch Zwijgen (Indo Silence) opens up a conversation about a Dutch colonial past that has often been left unspoken.
The filmmakers
Sven Peetoom is an Indo-Dutch filmmaker from Rotterdam. He obtained his bachelor’s degree in Film and Literary Studies at Leiden University in 2016 and studied Documentary Directing and Editing at the European Film College in 2017. In 2022, he was a performer in the Swiss theatre production Making Memories, which also explored the obstacles to understanding the Dutch-Indonesian past. Sven is the co-director of the documentary Indisch Zwijgen. With this documentary, he aims to explore what it means to be Indo-Dutch in the present day and how the silence surrounding this history can be broken.
Juliette Dominicus completed a bachelor’s degree in Liberal Arts and Sciences in Utrecht and a master’s degree in Documentary and Fiction at the University of Amsterdam. Juliette is the co-director of Indisch Zwijgen and also one of the protagonists in the film. In the documentary, she will, together with two third-generation Indo-Dutch artists, explore how they can give new meaning to their Indo-Dutch identity through their artistic practices.
