AFFR celebrates its 25th anniversary in grand style! In a bold break with tradition, this year the festival opens with a fiction film: The Great Arch by Stéphane Demoustier. This quintessential architecture story centers on a prestigious competition with an unexpected winner, political intrigue, construction challenges, and an architect who can seem an idealist to some and an egotist to others.
It is 1982. French President François Mitterrand announces a competition for a new monument at La Défense, as part of his megalomaniac Grands Projets, eight monuments to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the French Republic. Unexpectedly, the until then unknown Danish architect Johan Otto von Spreckelsen, played by Claes Bang (The Square) wins the assignment for this Grande Arche de la Défense. Together with his wife and business partner Liv, Sidse Babett Knudsen (Borgen), he moves to Paris to realise the project. A difficult collaboration with architect Paul Andreu, constraints imposed by building regulations and tendering processes, and the political change after Mitterrand’s loss of the parliamentary elections in 1986, cause his “cube" - as he affectionately calls the project - to increasingly run into problems. A gripping drama ánd a loving ode to the complexities of architecture!

De Franse president François Mitterrand schrijft een wedstrijd uit voor een nieuw monument op La Défense, als onderdeel van zijn megalomane Grands Projets, acht monumenten om het 200-jarig bestaan van de Franse republiek te vieren. Onverwacht wint de tot dan toe onbekende Deense architect Johan Otto von Spreckelsen, gespeeld door Claes Bang (The Square) de opdracht voor deze Grande Arche de la Défense. Samen met zijn vrouw en zakenpartner Liv, Sidse Babett Knudsen (Borgen), gaat hij naar Parijs om het project te realiseren. Door de moeilijke samenwerking met architect Paul Andreu, belemmerende bouwvoorschriften en aanbestedingsprocedures, en de politieke veranderingen na Mitterrand’s verlies van de verkiezingen van 1986, komt zijn ‘kubus’ - zoals hij het project liefkozend noemt - echter steeds verder in de problemen. Een aangrijpend drama én een liefdevolle ode aan het architectenvak!
