Voor de opening van AFFR 2026 reizen we naar Tokio, in de Nederlandse première van Numakage Public Pool (Shingo Ota, 2025) - een teder, bitterzoet portret van een geliefd openbaar zwembad, gefilmd vol warmte, humor en prachtige beelden. Voor de eerste keer screent het festival een Japanse openingsfilm, natuurlijk gevolgd door het traditionele openingsfeest.

For the opening of AFFR 2026 we travel to Tokyo, with the Dutch premiere of Numakage Public Pool by Shingo Ota, a tender and bittersweet portrait of a beloved public swimming pool, given with warmth, humour and beautiful imagery. For the first time ever, the festival opens with a Japanese film, followed by the traditional opening night party!

For more than fifty years, Numakage Public Pool has been a daily refuge for children and families, a place of wellbeing for older residents, a workplace, and a discreet meeting point for the local LGBTQ+ community. When plans are made to demolish the pool to make way for a new school, an entire community is forced to confront the loss of this piece of public architecture. As residents, workers and local businesses fight to save the pool, the film becomes a moving reflection on the social significance of public spaces

Numakage Pubic Pool is al meer dan 50 jaar een dagelijks toevluchtsoord voor kinderen en families, een heilzame plek voor ouderen, een werkplek en een discrete ontmoetingsplek voor de plaatselijke lhbtq+ gemeenschap. Wanneer er plannen komen voor de sloop van het zwembad, om zo ruimte te maken voor een nieuwe school, wordt een hele gemeenschap geconfronteerd met het mogelijke verlies van dit stuk openbare architectuur. Inwoners, werknemers en plaatselijke bedrijfjes trekken ten strijde om het zwembad te redden, in deze ontroerende film over de sociale betekenis van openbare ruimtes.

Het Architectuur Filmfestival Rotterdam (AFFR) is het meest toonaangevende festival over film, architectuur en de stad ter wereld. Ieder jaar in oktober brengt AFFR filmmakers, architecten, ontwerpers en het bredere publiek samen om via films de sociale, politieke en culturele dimensies van de gebouwde omgeving te verkennen.
