In zijn nieuwe voorstelling Shelly Shonk Fiffit boort Benjamin Abel Meirhaeghe een thema aan dat al even ondoorgrondelijk is als de titel: het kosmische. Zoals steeds vertrekt Meirhaeghe niet van een tekst of afgelijnd concept, maar begint alles vanuit bepaalde fascinaties en de dynamische groep performers die hij samenbrengt.

Op 25 december 2021 werd de James Webb Space Telescope gelanceerd. Deze infraroodtelescoop is de grootste en gesofisticeerdste ruimtetelescoop ooit, en laat toe om ver en diep in het heelal én het verleden te kijken. Webb gaat onder andere op zoek naar de ‘kosmische dageraad’: het licht van de allereerste sterren die kort na de geboorte van het heelal zijn ontstaan.

“Par l’espace l’univers me comprend et m’engloutit comme un point; par la pensée je le comprends.” (Blaise Pascal, Pensées, 1670)

De oneindigheid van het heelal verzwelgt ons, de wetenschap is zoekende maar onze verbeelding is absoluut. Meer nog dan door de ontdekkingstocht van deze telescoop is Benjamin Abel Meirhaeghe gefascineerd door het vermogen waarmee de mens met zijn gedachten boven zichzelf en het heelal kan uitstijgen. Door zijn vermogen tot inventiviteit. Meirhaeghe linkt in deze voorstelling de hightech van een telescoop aan de primitiviteit van ambachten en technieken.

Reisgezel op deze trip voorbij de grenzen van ons lichaam en onze tijd is de Italiaanse componist Caterina Barbieri. Barbieri maakt elektronische muziek, met een “transformerend en geestverruimend” potentieel. Op het hypnotiserende Fantas (van het magistrale album Ecstatic Computation uit 2019) geven de performers, zangers en dansers zich over aan het onverklaarbare en onzegbare.

Shelly Shonk Fiffit wordt een intense en extatische beeldende en muzikale trip, doorheen onze innerlijke wereld en de uithoeken van de kosmos. Fiffit!

As always, Meirhaeghe does not start from a text or a defined concept, but everything starts from certain fascinations and the dynamic group of performers he brings together.


On the 25th of December 2021, the James Webb Space Telescope was launched. This infrared telescope is the largest and most sophisticated space telescope ever, allowing us to look far and deep into the universe as well as the past. Among other things, Webb will search for the "cosmic dawn": the light of the very first stars that formed shortly after the birth of the universe.

The infinity of the universe swallows us whole, science is searching but our imagination is absolute. Even more than by the discovery of this telescope, Benjamin Abel Meirhaeghe is fascinated by the ability through which man's thoughts can rise above themselves and the universe. By his ability to invent. In this performance, Meirhaeghe links the high-tech of a telescope to the primitiveness of crafts and techniques.

Travel companion on this trip beyond the limits of our bodies and time is Italian composer Caterina Barbieri. Barbieri makes electronic music, with "transformative and mind-expanding" potential.
