Choreograaf Trajal Harrell laat zich inspireren door muzieklegende en burgerrechtenactiviste Nina Simone. De aanleiding is een persoonlijke ontmoeting waarvan de resonantie zich pas jaren later ontvouwt: de ontdekking van Simone als stem, als lichaam, als attitude. De choreografie beweegt zich op het spanningsveld tussen stem en muziek, klassieke vorm en radicale expressie. Een stuk over luisteren, ontdekken wat je jarenlang over het hoofd zag en de onherroepelijke betovering van een iconisch figuur.


In Late to the Party, Trajal Harrell approaches the music of Nina Simone from a belated yet urgent perspective. The work begins from a personal encounter whose resonance unfolds only decades later: the discovery of Simone as voice, as body, as attitude. Moving between voice and music, classical form and radical expression, the choreographic project asks what happens when these elements are separated and brought together anew.
