A lesbian genealogy within the history of dance

“What are we to do with our inheritances? Can we ever move on?” The question arises for Garance Maillot upon the unexpected death of her grandfather. To loss, the young artist responds with the urgency of dance, the affirmation of self, the summoning of historical lesbian figures. A research takes shape.

“Wat moeten we met wat we erven? Kunnen we ooit verder?” Die vraag dringt zich aan Garance Maillot op na het onverwachte overlijden van haar grootvader. Op het verlies antwoordt de jonge kunstenaar met de urgentie van de dans, de bevestiging van het zelf en het oproepen van historische lesbische figuren. Zo krijgt een onderzoek vorm.

Soms slaat de leegte die een vertrek achterlaat een bres: emotie stroomt naar binnen, het denken volgt, en het lichaam met hen mee — een lichaam dat rouwt en zich herinnert, maar bovenal een lichaam dat handelt. Tijdens de begrafenis van haar grootvader kiest Garance Maillot ervoor te dansen in plaats van te spreken. Die beweging zet een onderzoek in gang, waarin erfenis, heden en toekomst met elkaar verweven raken.

Gevoed door de geschriften van Monique Wittig en Audre Lorde gaat de jonge danser en performer op zoek naar lesbische en queer figuren binnen de choreografische kunst. Ze verdiept zich in het werk van Loïe Fuller, Valeska Gert, Lucinda Childs en Jill Johnston, “dubbellichamen” die de weg hebben gebaand. Ze activeert de archieven opnieuw en verweeft ze met haar eigen ervaring, terwijl ze “een lesbische genealogie binnen de dansgeschiedenis” creëert. Met storytelling, beweging, zang en directe aanspreking van het publiek, en door stigma’s te ontmantelen, probeert ze “ervoor te zorgen dat dit woord nooit vast komt te liggen, zodat het alle contouren van het levende kan omvatten.”

 


Sometimes, the void left by a departure opens a breach: emotion rushes into it, thought follows, and the body with them — a body that grieves and remembers, and above all, a body that acts. At her grandfather’s funeral, Garance Maillot chooses to dance rather than speak. This movement sets a research in motion, at the heart of which inheritance, present and future become intertwined. 

Nourished by the writings of Monique Wittig and Audre Lorde, the young dancer and performer sets out in search of lesbian and queer figures in choreographic art, immersing herself in the work of Loïe Fuller, Valeska Gert, Lucinda Childs and Jill Johnston, “double bodies” who paved the way. She reactivates the archives, weaving them together with her own experience as she creates “a lesbian genealogy within the history of dance.” Through storytelling, movement, song, direct address to the audience, and by dismantling stigma, she seeks “to ensure that this word never becomes fixed, so that it may embrace all the contours of the living.”

Over Garance Maillot

Garance Maillot werd in 1998 geboren in Le Pré-Saint-Gervais, de kleinste gemeente van de regio Île-de-France. Ze volgde een opleiding in klassieke en hedendaagse dans en studeerde vervolgens Hypokhâgne-Khâgne in Parijs. Daarna verdiepte ze zich in Montréal in de Gaga-bewegingstaal bij James Viveiros, om vervolgens naar Brussel te verhuizen. Daar behaalde ze in 2024 haar masterdiploma Dance and Choreographic Practices aan het INSAS, in samenwerking met Charleroi Danse en La Cambre. In 2021 creëerde ze samen met Marco, politiek vluchteling en lid van het collectief Les Dégommeuses, en Wanda Bernasconi de voorstelling Marco, avec Marco. Het werk werd gepresenteerd in het Théâtre de la Cité Internationale in Parijs.

Momenteel werkt ze als performer en artistiek assistent met Jorge Léon, Serge-Aimé Coulibaly, Simone Aughterlony en het gezelschap Tumbleweed. Ze ontwikkelt een choreografische praktijk waarin ze verbindingen legt tussen vraagstukken rond ruimte, lichaam en taal. Gevoed door het schrijven — poëzie en korte verhalen — ontvouwt ze een wereld waarin het lichaam de beschadigde werkelijkheid die het bewoont bevraagt. Haar instrumenten zijn verbeelding, herhaling en een weefsel van persoonlijke en historische archieven. Humor is daarbij nooit ver weg…

Met haar eerste werk, STONE, gecopresenteerd door Charleroi Danse, Les Halles de Schaerbeek en La Balsamine, geeft ze vorm aan een choreografische taal die geworteld is in fragmentatie en experiment, en waarin het idee van rouw als horizon steeds aanwezig is.

 

About Garance Maillo

Born in 1998 in Le Pré-Saint-Gervais, the smallest municipality in the Île-de-France region, she trained in classical and contemporary dance before pursuing her studies in Hypokhâgne-Khâgne in Paris. She continued her training in the Gaga movement language in Montreal with James Viveiros, then moved to Brussels, where she graduated in 2024 with a Master’s degree in Dance and Choreographic Practices from INSAS, in partnership with Charleroi Danse and La Cambre. In 2021, she co-created Marco, avec Marco, with Marco, a political refugee and member of the Les Dégommeuses collective, and Wanda Bernasconi. The piece was presented at the Théâtre de la Cité Internationale in Paris. 

She currently works as a performer and artistic assistant with Jorge Léon, Serge-Aimé Coulibaly, Simone Aughterlony, and the Tumbleweed company. She is developing a choreographic practice that weaves connections between questions of space, the body, and language. Nourished by writing (poetry, short stories), she unfolds a world in which the body questions the damaged reality it inhabits. Her tools are imagination, repetition, and a fabric of intimate and historical archives. Humour is never far away… 

With her first work, STONE, co-presented by Charleroi Danse, Les Halles de Schaerbeek and La Balsamine, she is shaping a choreographic language grounded in fragment and experimentation, traversed by the idea of mourning as a horizon.
