XANUUN by X_YUSUF_BOSS offers a raw and confrontational perspective on power, heritage, and identity, bringing the pain and struggle of young migrants to life in a compelling fusion of dance, music, and spoken word.

XANUUN (Somali for "pain") is a performance about power, heritage, and the impact of language. Choreographer Mohamed Yusuf Boss creates a gripping, physical performance in which dance, music, and spoken word merge into a powerful statement.

The performance is based on the stories of young Somali migrants who traveled through the Netherlands to the United Kingdom. Where they sought safety, they often found discrimination and excessive violence instead. XANUUN brings these stories to the stage and poses the question: how do words shape our bodies and souls?

One performer speaks from a radio booth, inspired by 'hate radio,' a Rwandan station that spread propaganda and hate. The dancers respond physically to the impact of these words. Their bodies become the battleground of power structures, where exclusion and resistance constantly shift. Grime and Trap provide the musical foundation of XANUUN—genres that capture the frustration and energy of a generation, giving the performance a raw and urgent dynamic.

XANUUN is a call to listen to voices that are too often ignored. It is expression, resistance, and remembrance.

X_YUSUF_BOSS is the home and platform of choreographer Mohamed Yusuf Boss. Through dance, we create connections between disciplines and communities, with a focus on the search for shared humanity. Our work is rooted in the principles of 'Each One Teach One' and 'Ubuntu,' emphasizing mutual learning and the building of a collective community.

 

XANUUN (Somalisch voor "pijn") is een voorstelling over macht, afkomst en de impact van taal. Choreograaf Mohamed Yusuf Boss zet met XANUUN een indringende, fysieke performance neer waarin dans, muziek en woord samensmelten tot een krachtig statement.

De voorstelling is gebaseerd op de verhalen van jonge migranten uit Somalië, die via Nederland in het Verenigd Koninkrijk terechtkwamen. Waar zij veiligheid zochten, vonden zij vaak discriminatie en buitensporig geweld. XANUUN brengt deze verhalen naar het podium en stelt de vraag: hoe beïnvloeden woorden ons lichaam en onze ziel?

Een performer spreekt vanuit een radiobooth, geïnspireerd op ‘hate radio’, een Rwandese zender die propaganda en haat verspreidde. De dansers reageren fysiek op de impact van deze woorden. Hun lichamen worden het speelveld van machtsstructuren, waarin uitsluiting en verzet zich afwisselen. Grime en Trap vormen de muzikale basis van XANUUN: genres die de frustratie en energie van een generatie uitdrukken en de voorstelling een rauwe, urgente dynamiek geven. 
XANUUN is een oproep om te luisteren naar stemmen die vaak worden genegeerd. Het is expressie, verzet en herinnering.

X_YUSUF_BOSS is het huis en platform van choreograaf Mohamed Yusuf Boss. Vanuit dans creëren we verbinding tussen disciplines en gemeenschappen, met als kern de zoektocht naar gedeelde menselijkheid. We werken vanuit de principes ‘Each One Teach One’ en ‘Ubuntu’, waarin wederzijds leren en het bouwen van een collectieve gemeenschap centraal staan.
