Mx. CoelaCunt will live forever is a performance in which creator, musician, and performer Djuwa Mroivili takes you into the depths. Into deep seas, fractured roots, ancient rituals, and new forms of resistance. Djuwa draws connections between Comorian traditions, queer culture, and the mysterious life of the deep sea - a world still largely unknown to humans.
The Comoros Islands - where Djuwa traces a family history - is where the essence of this journey unfolds: a place where oral traditions, music, and campy weddings intertwine the past and present. A place where matriarchal and patriarchal structures coexist. But also a place where European colonizers once stigmatized existence itself - and erased the lives of those whose gender and sexuality defied colonial norms.
Mx. CoelaCunt will live forever is a tribute to everything that moves, shifts, and refuses to disappear. An ode to survival - for every body and being that refuses to conform. Through a fluid blend of musical languages, choreography, fashion, spoken word, and glamour, Djuwa creates a performance that is both healing and confrontational.
Inspiration Mx. CoelaCunt
Mx. CoelaCunt is inspired by the coelacanth: a fish with a crucial role in evolutionary theory. A fish with primitive lungs and fins that move like the limbs of land animals - unnoticed by European scientists, but long known to Comorian fishers.
In Djuwa’s hands Mx. CoelaCunt becomes an icon: a symbol of all that is fluid and uncontainable. Between fish and human, between gender and no gender, between land and sea, between now and forever. The coelacanth becomes a metaphor for the stigmatization and appropriation of all that is not understood.
Mx. CoelaCunt will live forever is een performance waarin maker, muzikant en performer Djuwa Mroivili je meeneemt naar de diepte. Naar diepe zeeën, versplinterde roots, eeuwenoude rituelen en nieuwe vormen van verzet. Ze trekt daarin lijnen tussen Comorese tradities, de hedendaagse queerscene, en het leven in de diepzee – een wereld waar mensen weinig van weten.
De Comoren – waar Djuwa een familiegeschiedenis heeft – vormen het kloppend hart van deze zoektocht: een plek waar orale tradities, muziek en glitterrijke bruiloften het heden en verleden met elkaar verweven. Waar zowel matriarchale als patriarchale structuren naast elkaar bestaan. Maar ook een plek waar Europese machthebbers het bestaan stigmatiseerden en het leven uitwisten van mensen wiens gender en seksualiteit niet pasten binnen de koloniale normen.

Met een fluïde mix van verschillende muzikale talen, choreografie, fashion, spoken word en glamour creëert Djuwa een performance die helend én confronterend is.

Mx. CoelaCunt is geïnspireerd op de coelacant: een vis die een cruciale rol in de evolutietheorie wordt toegeschreven. Een vis met primitieve longen en vinnen die bewegen als viervoeters op het land, onopgemerkt door Europese wetenschappers, maar al lange tijd bekend onder Comorese vissers.
Mx. CoelaCunt wordt in Djuwa’s handen een icoon: symbool voor alles wat fluïde en ongrijpbaar is. Tussen vis en mens, tussen gender en no gender, tussen land en zee, tussen nu en altijd. De coelacant wordt een metafoor voor de stigmatisering en toe-eigening van alles wat niet begrepen wordt.
