For centuries, the experiences of women and genderqueer people have been mystified in art, stories, and medical science. THE SCREAM questions what happens when we break through that gaze and reclaim our own experiences.

In this multidisciplinary performance, Nastaran Razawi Khorasani, Melyn Chow, Francesca Lazzeri, Princess Isatu Hassan Bangura, and Milou van Duijnhoven bring to life a story that is both historical and painfully urgent today: a story about bodies, power, and expression. Across generations and stages of life, they expose how both pain and pleasure are suppressed, and what happens when the scream held inside the body is finally released.

After Battlefield of Dreams, which explored the desire, or absence of desire, to have children, director Floor Houwink ten Cate once again opens up an urgent and intimate medical-ethical question. With a text by Floor and Lotte Houwink ten Cate and Esther Duysker, live cinema, a boundary-pushing choral work by Annelinde Bruijs, and a performance installation by Studio Dennis Vanderbroeck, THE SCREAM becomes an explosive theatre experience and a powerful plea for self-determination when it comes to pain and pleasure.

 

Eeuwenlang zijn ervaringen van vrouwen en genderqueers gemystificeerd in kunst, verhalen en de medische wetenschap. THE SCREAM bevraagt wat er gebeurt wanneer we die blik doorbreken en onze eigen ervaringen terug opeisen.

In deze multidisciplinaire voorstelling brengen Nastaran Razawi Khorasani, Melyn Chow, Francesca Lazzeri, Princess Isatu Hassan Bangura en Milou van Duijnhoven een historisch én pijnlijk actueel verhaal over lichamen, macht en expressie. Dwars door generaties en levensfasen heen, leggen zij bloot hoe pijn én genot worden onderdrukt en wat er gebeurt wanneer de ingehouden schreeuw die in het lichaam vastzit eindelijk naar buiten komt.

Regisseur Floor Houwink ten Cate breekt na Battlefield of Dreams over (het ontbreken van) de kinderwens, opnieuw een urgent en intiem medisch-ethisch vraagstuk open. Met een tekst van Floor en Lotte Houwink ten Cate en Esther Duysker, (live) cinema, een grensverleggende koorstuk van Annelinde Bruijs, en een performance installatie van Studio Dennis Vanderbroeck, wordt THE SCREAM een explosieve theaterervaring en een krachtig pleidooi voor zelfbeschikking ten aanzien van pijn en genot.

Over de maker

Floor Houwink ten Cate (1987) is a transdisciplinary theatre-maker, director, and writer. Her work moves between performance, music theatre, and cinema. With a background in film, she creates physical portraits that reveal intimate, often unspoken aspects of life, such as domestic violence (Sea of Silence) and the fear of dying from illness or in a war zone (Panic Room). Her work is politically engaged, emotionally layered, and a fusion of fiction and documentary. Through this hybrid form, she creates unsettling confrontations that claim space for reflection and dialogue.

After graduating from the Netherlands Film Academy and Utrecht University, she was co-artistic director of the music theatre collective Nineties Productions from 2015 to 2020. With this collective, she won the BNG Bank Theater Prize in 2017 for emerging and innovative young makers. The successful electro-opera Merkel (2019) marked her directing debut. At the international production house Frascati in the Netherlands, she went on to create the acclaimed performances One Man Show (2021), about toxic masculinity, and Sea of Silence (2022). In collaboration with Katie Mitchell, Floor created the ecofeminist mini-opera A Play for the Living in a Time of Extinction (2022) for the Holland Festival. In 2023, she was selected for the Women Opera Makers Workshop at the prestigious Académie of the Festival d’Aix-en-Provence.

Since 2023, Floor has been part of the artistic team at Theater Utrecht, Centre for Performing Arts. There, she created the main-stage productions Atropa (2023) and Panic Room (2024). Her most recent main-stage production, Battlefield of Dreams, a physical performance, intimate documentary, mini-opera, and talk show in one, about the most political organ, the uterus, premiered in April 2025 and was warmly received by both press and audiences. This season, she is directing Brabo Leone by Sarah Janneh, a co-production by NITE, Theater Utrecht, and MusicalMakers, as well as The Actor by Florian Myjer. From 2025 to 2027, she will receive the Fast Forward grant from the Performing Arts Fund NL to further develop her work internationally.

Floor Houwink ten Cate (1987) is een transdisciplinaire theatermaker, regisseur en schrijver. Haar werk beweegt zich tussen performance, muziektheater en cinema. Met een achtergrond in film creëert ze fysieke portretten die intieme, vaak onuitgesproken aspecten van het leven blootleggen, zoals huiselijk geweld (Sea of Silence) en de angst om te sterven aan een ziekte of in oorlogsgebied (Panic Room). Haar werk is politiek geëngageerd, emotioneel gelaagd, en een versmelting van fictie en documentaire. Door deze hybride vorm creëert ze ontregelende confrontaties die ruimte opeisen voor reflectie en dialoog. 

Na haar afstuderen aan de Nederlandse Filmacademie en de Universiteit Utrecht was ze van 2015 tot 2020 co-artistiek leider van muziektheatercollectief Nineties Productions. Met dit collectief won ze in 2017 de BNG Bank Theaterprijs voor opkomende en innovatieve jonge makers. De succesvolle electro-opera Merkel (2019) was haar regiedebuut. Bij het internationale productiehuis Frascati (NL) creëerde ze vervolgens de veelgeprezen voorstellingen One Man Show (2021) over toxische mannelijkheid en Sea of Silence (2022). In samenwerking met Katie Mitchell maakte Floor de ecofeministische mini-opera A Play for the Living in a Time of Extinction (2022) voor het Holland Festival. In 2023 werd ze geselecteerd voor de Women Opera Makers Workshop van de prestigieuze Académie van Festival d'Aix-en-Provence. 

Sinds 2023 maakt Floor deel uit van het artistieke team van Theater Utrecht - Centre for Performing Arts. Daar maakte ze de grote zaalvoorstellingen Atropa (2023) en Panic Room (2024). Haar laatste grote zaalvoorstelling Battlefield of Dreams; een fysieke performance, intieme documentaire, mini opera en talkshow ineen over het meest politieke orgaan, de baarmoeder, kwam uit in april 2025 en werd lovend ontvangen door pers en publiek. Dit seizoen regisseert ze Brabo Leone van Sarah Janneh (coproductie van NITE, Theater Utrecht en MusicalMakers) en The Actor van Florian Myjer. In 2025-2027 ontvangt ze het Fast Forward-stipendium van het Fonds Podiumkunsten om haar werk internationaal door te ontwikkelen.
