On the banks of the Suriname River lies a mystical village: Dahomey. Named after the West African kingdom in present-day Benin, this village is a bastion of resistance, spirituality, and pride. It is a place where the past is still tangibly present and where outsiders are not granted access.
In DAHOMEY, choreographer Dietrich Pott interweaves the history of the Kingdom of Dahomey with the contemporary struggles of Black women in Suriname. The performance is a powerful ode to female leadership, ritual strength, and spiritual heritage.
With an energetic blend of traditional African dance styles and European contemporary dance, Dietrich Pott creates his signature physical movement language: expressive, grounded, and charged with meaning. The choreography is raw and intense, yet also intimate and ritualistic—a physical narrative that speaks without words.
DAHOMEY is the follow-up to Kromanti, the successful production that Dietrich Pott created with ISH Dance Collective in 2024.
For anyone aged 12 and up who wishes to immerse themselves in a piece of little-seen history, a tribute to Black womanhood, and the invisible connections between Africa and Suriname.

Met een energieke mix van traditionele Afrikaanse dansstijlen en Europese moderne dans, creëert Dietrich Pott zijn kenmerkende fysieke danstaal: expressief, grondgebonden en geladen met betekenis.
