Over TRaces
Tijdens het gratis expo-programma TRaces nodigen we Rotterdamse kunstenaars, van opkomend tot gevestigd, uit om ons gebouw te gebruiken als podium voor doorlopende tentoonstellingen van interdisciplinair werk dat verbinding maakt met de stad Rotterdam en haar inwoners. De hal is de tentoonstellingsruimte waar deze uitgenodigde Rotterdamse kunstenaars hun sporen achterlaten. Is er een voorstelling in de grote zaal? Dan kun je voor aanvang, tijdens en kort na afloop van de voorstelling altijd binnenlopen tijdens de expo-periode. Vanaf 2 december verwelkomen we Shino Matsuura
Over de kunstenaar
Shino’s artistieke drijfveer krijgt vorm via communicatie met anderen: door duurzame relaties op te bouwen en te onderhouden via beeldende kunst, media-art, documentaire, mode, grafisch ontwerp, performance, sculptuur, videowerk, installaties en curatie. Voor Shino draait artistieke activiteit om het mogelijk maken van communicatie tussen mensen over wie zij zijn — inclusief zijzelf. Kunst is voor haar een hulpmiddel dat het leven dient en datgene wat ze het meest waardeert: relaties. Haar trouw aan het leven zelf, in plaats van aan een vastomlijnd idee van ‘kunst’, zorgt voor een zeer open en vloeiende opvatting van wat dat woord betekent.
Haar huidige project bestaat eruit lege cassettehoesjes uit te delen aan relaties over de hele wereld, met het verzoek die op welke manier dan ook te vullen: met kunstwerken, persoonlijke voorwerpen, boodschappen… Ondertussen archiveert ze alles, stelt ze het werk tentoon en blijft ze in contact. Het samenbrengen van al deze cassettes is een onderneming die juridische, economische en geografische grenzen overstijgt. Andere voorbeelden zijn het cureren van een internationale tentoonstelling van een maand met regelmatige events, filmvertoningen en performances; het consequent ontwikkelen van modecollecties die in Europa en Japan worden verspreid; en het ontwerpen van ruimtes die specifieke persoonlijke ontmoetingen tussen vreemden mogelijk maken.
De eerlijkheid van haar benadering wordt onderstreept door haar onzekere positie tussen Nederland en Japan — zowel geografisch als cultureel. Vanaf het begin is de frictie tussen verschillende wereldbeelden en manieren van communiceren een wezenlijk onderdeel van wie zij is.
Het werk van Shino Matsuura is te zien van 2 december tot en met 29 december 2025 in de erker van TR25 Schouwburg. Op zaterdag 6 december om 19:00 (voorafgaand aan de voorstelling My Fierce Ignorant Step proosten we op de opening van de tentoonstelling Meer over TRaces en een overzicht van de voorgaande edities
About TRaces
During the free expo program TRaces, we invite Rotterdam artists, from emerging to established, to use our building as a stage for ongoing exhibitions of interdisciplinary work that connect with the city of Rotterdam and its residents. The lobby is the exhibition space where these invited Rotterdam artists leave their mark! Is Theater Rotterdam open? Then you can always drop in during the expo period. From December 2nd until December 29th we welcome the artist .
About the artist
Shino’s artistic drive finds its form through communication with others, by forming and engaging in lasting relationships with people through the use of fine art, media art, documentary, fashion, graphic design, performance, sculpture, video work, installation, and curation. For Shino, the point of artistic activity is to facilitate communication between people about who they are, including herself. Art is a tool that serves Shino’s life and what she loves most: relationships. Her loyalty to life itself instead of a perceived idea of ‘art’ makes for a very fluid position about what the word means.
Her current project entails handing out empty cassette cases to relations all over the world and asking them to fill them in whichever way; artworks, personal artefacts, messages,... all the while she archives, exposes, and stays in touch. The assembling of all these cassettes is an undertaking that transcends juridic, economic, or geographical borders. Other examples include curating a month-long international exhibition with periodic happenings, cinema screenings, and performances. Consistently developing fashion collections to spread in Europe and Japan and designing spaces facilitating particular personal exchanges between strangers.
The honesty of her approach is underlined by her uncertain position between The Netherlands and Japan, in a geographical as well as cultural sense. Since the beginning, friction between different worldviews and ways of communicating has been inherent to who she is.
This edition of TRaces will have its grand opening Saturday December 6th at 19:00 in the erker of TR25 Schouwburg, prior to the the performance My Fierce Ignorant Step. You are most welcome to join us and have a toast on the expo. From then on the expo is free to visit until December 29th before and after the performances in the main auditorium.
