Twee mannen ontmoeten elkaar. In hun lichamen schuilt hun kracht. Beide dansers leven in het hier en nu. Tegelijkertijd zijn ze verbonden door een complexe koloniale geschiedenis. De een is kind van overlevenden, de ander erfgenaam van overheersers. Twee werelden die op elkaar botsen. Is vrede mogelijk?

Two men meet. In their bodies lies their strength. Both dancers live in the here and now. Yet, they are connected by a complex colonial history. One is the child of survivors, the other the heir of oppressors. Two worlds that clash. Is peace possible?

ROOM IN OUR HOUSE brings a groundbreaking countervoice in this time of crises. Inspired by the centuries-old peace treaty between the Dutch and the Haudenosaunee, the NBP team immersed themselves in their community in the United States. A world of democracy, equality, and gentleness. Directed by inspirational speaker Michelle Schenandoah (Oneida/Haudenosaunee) and choreographer/theater director Nicole Beutler (Dutch-German), with texts by Indigenous writer and activist Ty Defoe (Oneida/Haudenosaunee, Anishinaabe), ROOM IN OUR HOUSE invites the audience to explore each individual's responsibility in peacemaking.

CLOSE ENCOUNTER / FUTURE STORIES

After completing the climate trilogy with the dance opera NOW WE ARE EARTH, Nicole Beutler Projects focuses on new perspectives on the future of humanity on Earth. Here, political-poetic performances are created that strive for an inclusive society and bring attention to social justice and Indigenous knowledge. For this production, Beutler sought a collaboration with Michelle Schenandoah, founder of Rematriation: an organization invested in uplifting Indigenous women’s voices. 
 
ROOM IN OUR HOUSE contains English spoken text. The outdoor version will premiere at Oerol 2026, and the theater version will premiere during Julidans.

 

ROOM IN OUR HOUSE brengt een grensverleggend tegengeluid in deze tijd van crises. Geïnspireerd door het eeuwenoude vredesverdrag van Nederland met de Haudenosaunee, dompelde het team van NBP zich onder in hun gemeenschap in de Verenigde Staten. Een wereld van democratie, gelijkwaardigheid en zachtheid. Onder regie van inspirational speaker Michelle Schenandoah (Oneida/Haudensaunee) en choreograaf/theatermaker Nicole Beutler (Nederlands-Duits) en met teksten van de inheemse schrijver en activist Ty Defoe (Oneida/Haudenosaunee, Anishinaabe), nodigt ROOM IN OUR HOUSE het publiek uit op zoek te gaan naar ieders verantwoordelijkheid in peacemaking.

CLOSE ENCOUNTER / FUTURE STORIES

Na de voltooiing van de klimaattrilogie met de dansopera NOW WE ARE EARTH, richt Nicole Beutler Projects zich op nieuwe perspectieven op de toekomst van de mens op aarde. Hier ontstaan politiek-poëtische voorstellingen die een inclusieve samenleving nastreven en aandacht vragen voor sociale rechtvaardigheid en inheemse kennis. Voor deze productie zocht Beutler daarom een samenwerking op met Michelle Schenandoah, oprichter van Rematriation: een organisatie die opkomt voor de stem van inheemse vrouwen.

ROOM IN OUR HOUSE bevat Engelstalige gesproken tekst. De openluchtversie gaat in première tijdens Oerol 2026; de theaterversie tijdens Julidans.

Nicole Beutler is an internationally acclaimed choreographer and artistic director known for her interdisciplinary works at the intersection of performance, dance, visual arts and music theatre. For ROOM IN OUR HOUSE, Beutler sought collaboration with Michelle Schenandoah (Oneida/Haudenosaunee), Indigenous inspirational speaker and founder of Rematriation. This nonprofit organization is dedicated to uplifting Indigenous women’s voices and raising consciousness towards living in balance with Mother Earth.

All of Beutler’s projects are driven by the desire for a potentially better society. And all her activities are an invitation to connect and to reflect critically on the human existence.  For years, her work has highlighted the connection to the climate crisis. Indigenous knowledge and climate justice form the next step in search of a shared future, that is always rooted in the body.

 

Nicole Beutler is een bekroonde, internationaal bekende danstheaterkunstenaar en staat bekend om haar unieke benadering op het snijvlak van performance, dans, beeldende kunst en muziektheater. Voor deze productie gaat zij een bijzondere samenwerking aan met de Noord-Amerikaanse inheemse Michelle Schenandoah (Oneida/Haudenosaunee), inspirational speaker en mediamaker. Ze is de oprichter van de non- profitorganisatie Rematriation in Syracuse (VS), die zich inzet voor de waardigheid van het vrouwelijke op zoek naar een nieuwe balans op aarde.

Alle projecten van Nicole Beutler worden gedreven vanuit het verlangen naar een betere samenleving en nodigen via schoonheid, poëzie en muzikaliteit uit tot een kritische reflectie op de actualiteit. Met haar werk legt zij al jaren het verband met de klimaatcrisis. Inheemse kennis en klimaatrechtvaardigheid zijn een volgende stap op zoek naar een gezamenlijke toekomst en het lichaam ligt aan de basis van alles.
