Reinventing History. Inspired by Nathaniel Hawthorne’s novel The Scarlet Letter, Tambourines is Trajal Harrell’s tribute to all the women who, throughout history, were denied the right to make decisions about their own bodies.

Reinventing History. Geïnspireerd door Nathaniel Hawthorne’s roman The Scarlet Letter is Tambourines een eerbetoon van Trajal Harrell aan alle vrouwen die in de loop van de geschiedenis het recht werd ontzegd om over hun eigen lichaam te beschikken.

De choreografie is opgedeeld in drie bedrijven—Uitspatting, Educatie, Viering—en herinterpreteert het verhaal van Hester Prynne. In de roman wordt Hester veroordeeld tot het dragen van de scharlaken letter (A van Adulterie) nadat ze een buitenechtelijk kind heeft gekregen. Harrell stelt zich een alternatief einde voor: Wat als Hester werd gesteund in plaats van veroordeeld? Wat als het kind met vreugde werd verwelkomd in plaats van met schaamte?

Trajal Harrell, winnaar van de Zilveren Leeuw op de Biënnale Danza van Venetië in 2024, toont met deze diep ontroerende en subversieve dansproductie opnieuw hoe moed een blijvende erfenis kan creëren. Sinds de première op 7 februari 2024 in het Schiffbau in Zürich, verenigt Tambourines dansers en publiek in een gezamenlijke viering van de kracht om de toekomst te herscheppen.
 

Divided into three acts—Debauchery, Education, Celebration—the choreography reimagines the story of Hester Prynne. In the novel, she is condemned to wear the scarlet letter (A for Adultery) after giving birth to an illegitimate child. Harrell envisions an alternative ending for Hester: What if she had been supported instead of judged? What if the child had been welcomed with joy rather than shame?

Trajal Harrell, recipient of the Silver Lion at the 2024 Venice Biennale Danza, once again demonstrates how courage can create a lasting legacy with this deeply moving and subversive dance production. Since its premiere on February 7, 2024, at the Schiffbau, Tambourines has seen dancers and audiences come together in a shared celebration of the power to reshape the future.

Trajal Harrell (VS) verwierf internationale faam met Twenty Looks or Paris is Burning at the Judson Church en staat bekend om zijn unieke mix van voguing, postmoderne dans en butoh, doordrenkt met humor en kwetsbaarheid. Zijn werk is een eerbetoon aan de performers, met invloeden uit haute couture en een uitgesproken esthetiek. Harrell trad op bij toonaangevende festivals en instellingen wereldwijd, waaronder MoMA, Centre Pompidou en het Holland Festival. Als huisregisseur van Schauspielhaus Zürich (2019–2024) maakte hij o.a. The Köln Concert, The Romeo en Tambourines. Hij won diverse prijzen, waaronder de Zilveren Leeuw (Biennale Danza 2024) en werd door The New York Times geprezen voor een van de beste dansvoorstellingen van 2023.

Trajal Harrell (USA) gained international acclaim with Twenty Looks or Paris is Burning at the Judson Church and is known for his unique blend of voguing, postmodern dance, and butoh, infused with humor and vulnerability. His work pays tribute to performers, drawing inspiration from haute couture and a distinct aesthetic.

Harrell has performed at leading festivals and institutions worldwide, including MoMA, Centre Pompidou, and the Holland Festival. As resident director at Schauspielhaus Zürich (2019–2024), he created works such as The Köln Concert, The Romeo, and Tambourines. He has received numerous awards, including the Silver Lion (Biennale Danza 2024), and was praised by The New York Times for one of the best dance performances of 2023.
