Theatre maker Pankaj Tiwari grew up in a farming family and offers an intimate glimpse into his memories of the traditional, sustainable farming practices of his childhood, the gradual disappearance of these methods over the past twenty years, and the growing desire for organic and sustainable agriculture in Western societies.

Theatermaker Pankaj Tiwari groeide op in een boerenfamilie en geeft ons een inkijk in zijn herinneringen aan de traditionele, duurzame landbouwpraktijken uit zijn jeugd, de geleidelijke verdwijning van deze methoden in de voorbije twintig jaar en het groeiende verlangen naar biologische en duurzame landbouw in westerse samenlevingen.

The Harvest of Broken Promises is een theaterstuk dat zich afspeelt in het India van de jaren 90, op het moment dat de neoliberale markt zijn deuren opende voor mondiaal kapitaal. Het onderzoekt de transformatie van landbouwpraktijken en de verwoestende impact die deze verschuiving had op het leven van boeren, de lokale ecologie en het bredere sociale weefsel.

Centraal in de voorstelling staat de historische komst van multinationale ondernemingen zoals Monsanto, waarvan de genetisch gemodificeerde zaden, met name Bt-katoen, het symbool werden van de industriële landbouw en een einde maakten aan traditionele landbouwsystemen. Het werk confronteert de afhankelijkheidsstructuren die door dergelijke ondernemingen worden opgelegd en die nog steeds bepalend zijn voor de plattelandseconomieën en de ecologische toekomst.

Door videobeelden, interviews, live kunst en volksverhalen te combineren, beweegt het stuk zich tussen feit en mythe, tussen het persoonlijke en het politieke. Aan de hand van de verhalen van Pankaj Tiwari en een tiental boeren uit alle hoeken van de wereld, legt The Harvest of Broken Promises de diepe spanning vast tussen ambitie en overleven. Zijn verhaal wordt een spiegel voor een generatie die gevangen zit tussen de beloften van vooruitgang en het verlies van voorouderlijke kennis.

In het Europa van vandaag ziet Tiwari een verlangen naar biologische, ‘authentieke’ landbouw, terwijl elders juist die kennis is vernietigd door dezelfde mondiale systemen waar dit verlangen deel van uitmaakt. Deze tegenstrijdigheid vormt de kern van deze creatie die belicht hoe de hebzucht van bedrijven en de medeplichtigheid van de overheid die voorouderlijke kennis hebben begraven, ecologische cycli hebben verstoord en duizenden boeren tot schulden en zelfmoord hebben gedreven.

The Harvest of Broken Promises is a theatre performance set in India during the 1990s, at the moment when the neoliberal market opened its doors to global capital. It explores the transformation of agricultural practices and the devastating impact this shift had on the lives of farmers, local ecology, and the broader social fabric.

At the heart of the performance lies the historical arrival of multinational corporations such as Monsanto, whose genetically modified seeds—particularly Bt cotton—became symbols of industrial agriculture and brought traditional farming systems to an end. The work confronts the structures of dependency imposed by such corporations, which continue to shape rural economies and determine ecological futures.

By combining video footage, interviews, live art, and folk tales, the piece moves between fact and myth, between the personal and the political. Through the stories of Pankaj Tiwari and a dozen farmers from around the world, The Harvest of Broken Promises captures the profound tension between ambition and survival. His story becomes a mirror for a generation caught between the promises of progress and the loss of ancestral knowledge.

In today’s Europe, Tiwari observes a growing desire for organic and “authentic” agriculture, while elsewhere the very knowledge that underpins such practices has been destroyed by the same global systems of which this desire is a part. This contradiction lies at the core of the work, which sheds light on how corporate greed and government complicity have buried ancestral knowledge, disrupted ecological cycles, and driven thousands of farmers into debt and suicide.

Pankaj Tiwari is een hedendaagse kunstenaar, theatermaker, schrijver en curator uit Balrampur, India. Hij is momenteel gevestigd in Amsterdam en heeft een masterdiploma in theater van DAS Theatre Amsterdam. Zijn werken brengen oosterse perspectieven binnen in het westerse discours over sociaal-politieke kwesties.
Pankaj is ook winnaar van de prijs 3Package Deal (2021-22) van het Amsterdams Fonds voor de Kunst. Tussen 2020 en 2023 werkte hij als curator voor Gessnerallee Zürich. Momenteel is hij artistiek directeur van Stichting Studio Current in Amsterdam.

In het verleden en het heden werd/wordt het werk van Pankaj uitgenodigd en ondersteund door meerdere festivals en productiehuizen. Prabhash Chandra is een filmregisseur, geboren en getogen in Bihar, India. Hij behaalde een postdoctorale graad aan de afdeling Natuurkunde en Astrofysica van de Universiteit van Delhi. Hij is al tien jaar actief in de film- en theaterwereld, waar hij aan verschillende projecten werkt en tegelijkertijd workshops geeft en lesgeeft. Zijn eerste speelfilm, I'm Not The River Jhelum (Be Ches Ne Veth, 2022), werd door critici geprezen. Alaav is zijn meest recente werk.

Maria Dogahe is een Belgisch-Iraanse curator, dramaturg en activist, gevestigd in Brussel. Momenteel werkt ze als programmator podiumkunsten bij Kaaitheater (Brussel). Ze staat bekend om haar werk binnen de kunsten en het activisme, met een sterke aanwezigheid in Brussel. Maria maakt deel uit van het collectief Caddy for Palestine.

Nazanin Yalda is een Iraanse muzikante en componiste die in Brussel woont. In haar solowerk met de setār – een Iraans snaarinstrument – maakt ze gebruik van elektronische geluidsmodificaties om het akoestische bereik ervan te vergroten, wat resulteert in neoklassieke ambient soundscapes die een dromerig gevoel van melancholie oproepen. Het is een van de manieren waarop Nazanin onderzoekt hoe diverse werelden en tradities kunnen samensmelten om iets nieuws te creëren, of naast elkaar kunnen bestaan op een manier die elkaar verrijkt.

Pankaj Tiwari is a contemporary artist, theatre maker, writer, and curator from Balrampur, India. He is currently based in Amsterdam and holds a Master’s degree in Theatre from DAS Theatre Amsterdam. His work brings Eastern perspectives into Western discourses on socio-political issues.

Pankaj is also a recipient of the Amsterdam Fund for the Arts’ 3Package Deal Award (2021–22). Between 2020 and 2023, he worked as a curator at Gessnerallee Zurich. He is currently the Artistic Director of Stichting Studio Current in Amsterdam.

Prabhash Chandra is a filmmaker born and raised in Bihar, India. He holds a postgraduate degree from the Department of Physics and Astrophysics at the University of Delhi. For the past decade, he has been active in both film and theatre, working on a wide range of projects while also teaching and leading workshops. His debut feature film, I’m Not The River Jhelum (Be Ches Ne Veth, 2022), received critical acclaim. Alaav is his most recent work.

Maria Dogahe is a Belgian-Iranian curator, dramaturg, and activist based in Brussels. She currently works as a Performing Arts Programmer at Kaaitheater (Brussels). She is known for her work at the intersection of the arts and activism and has a strong presence within Brussels’ cultural landscape. Maria is also a member of the collective Caddy for Palestine.

Nazanin Yalda is an Iranian musician and composer based in Brussels. In her solo work with the setār—a traditional Iranian string instrument—she uses electronic sound manipulation to expand its acoustic possibilities, creating neo-classical ambient soundscapes imbued with a dreamlike sense of melancholy. Through this practice, Nazanin explores how different worlds and traditions can merge to create something new, or coexist in ways that enrich one another.
