Workshop: Feeling Rotterdam?

5-day workshop for local dancers, rooted in the creative philosophy of Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui .

Why is this workshop a special experience?

Nick Coutsier’s unique perspective
With over a decade of experience working with Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, Nick offers deep insight into the creative processes and methodologies developed within Larbi’s company. He will guide participants in merging Larbi’s philosophy with their own artistic journey, offering personal mentorship, especially for dancers transitioning into makers.

Artistic insights from Astrid Sweeny & Nassim Baddag
Both Astrid and Nassim are highly skilled dancers who trained under Sidi Larbi and have since grown into choreographers in their own right. Their work embodies Larbi’s philosophies while also pushing the boundaries of their own voices as makers. They will share how his approach shaped their practice, offering a unique perspective on how his techniques have evolved and how they continue to resonate in today’s dance landscape. They are also performing at the festival and may contribute to the workshop by sharing elements of their creative process.

Exploring dance-making and creative development
This workshop supports participants in developing their own movement language while learning from the practices that shaped Larbi’s work. Through a combination of Nick’s practice and the experiences of Astrid and Nassim, participants will develop their skills as dancers and creators.

A collaborative and immersive environment
This workshop offers a space for exchange - where you can experiment, reflect, and grow alongside other emerging makers. You’ll work in a supportive and collaborative setting, with feedback and inspiration coming not only from the facilitators, but from fellow participants.

Connecting with the festival’s theme: Do you have to compromise?
The workshop is closely aligned with the theme of Feeling Curious? Do you have to compromise? Participants will be encouraged to reflect on their own artistic practice and how they navigate creativity and compromise in the context of contemporary dance. As part of the program, you’ll also attend festival performances and reflect on them afterwards.

What we are looking for?
We are specifically looking for dancers who are self-taught or have developed their practice outside of formal educational settings. Sidenote: if you’ve been academically trained, you can still apply. This workshop is for those who are eager to explore their identity as creators, and who want to deepen their practice within the framework of Sidi Larbi’s dance methodology, while bringing their own voices into the creative process.

How to apply – deadline September 7
Please send a short video (min 1 min max. 2 minutes) of your own movement, and a motivation explaining why you would like to participate. Your submission should be received by September 7th. The results will be announced on September 10th.

The application link will be shared here soon.

We look forward to seeing your work and having you join us for this exciting workshop.
