Project: GPO Box No. 211 – Chapter II

“I’m interested in how theater can communicate what cannot be said. How a gesture, an object, or a silence can speak across borders, prison walls, and time.”

Theater maker Chun Shing Au (Hong Kong) investigates the intersections of visual poetics and political resistance. Rooted in object theater, mask, and puppetry, his work moves across disciplines and cultures, shaped by a journey through Hong Kong, Canada, the Czech Republic, and the Netherlands, where he graduated from DAS Theatre in 2024.

Together with his artistic and life partner Carmen Lee, Au co-founded Theatre du Poulet, a company that for nearly a decade has challenged the boundaries of object and devised theater.

During Welcome To Our Guesthouse, Chun Shing continues his long-term research project GPO Box No. 211. This work examines the silent but potent dialogue between a political prisoner - a friend and fellow artist - and the outside world. Using the language of objects, masks, and visual dramaturgy, Au investigates how artistic expression can persist under the constraints of censorship.

Chapter II marks a turning point: the formerly imprisoned friend, a peer from theater school, now joins the research in person. Their renewed artistic collaboration becomes an exploration of memory, separation, and resistance - responding directly to the first chapter of the project, developed while his friend was still incarcerated.
