Hoe dans je als je niet mag dansen?

In Iran is dansen officieel verboden. Sinds de Islamitische Revolutie hebben alle dansgezelschappen er hun deuren moeten sluiten. Veel dansers en choreografen zijn naar het buitenland gevlucht. Degenen die er nog wonen, moeten vindingrijk zijn. Hoe houden zij deze kunstvorm levend? Theatermaker Nastaran Razawi Khorasani presenteert de performance This is not a dance over censuur. Wat mag gezien worden en wat niet? Terwijl muziek en belichting elkaar steeds verder opzwepen, probeert ze haar dansende lichaam te beteugelen.

Tijdens de voorstelling geeft Nastaran het podium aan stemmen van choreografen en dansers die wonen in Iran en de diaspora. Hoe gaan zij om met het dansverbod? Hoe beoefenen zij hun beroep, welk gevaar lopen zij, voor welke vrijheden strijden zij? This is not a dance is een eerbetoon aan het lichaam dat wil bewegen. Een eerbetoon aan de kunst die gemaakt móet worden, in welke vorm dan ook.

This is not a dance is genomineerd voor de VSCD Mime/Performance Prijs 2024. De winnaar wordt bekendgemaakt tijdens het Gala van het Nederlands Theater op 15 september 2024.

Over Nastaran
Nastaran Razawi Khorasani is afgestudeerd aan de Toneelacademie Maastricht. Met Songs for no one ontving Nastaran tweemaal de BNG Bank Theaterprijs (2020 en 2021). De voorstelling werd geselecteerd voor Het TheaterFestival Vlaanderen 2022 en Theater der Welt in Frankfurt-Offenbach 2023. In 2023 werd Nastaran genomineerd voor de Gieskes-Strijbis Podiumprijs. This is not a dance is genomineerd voor de VSCD Mime/Performance Prijs 2024. Nastarans werk wordt zowel nationaal als internationaal getoond, o.a. op het Transform Festival in Leeds, Theater Commons Tokyo, Indonesian Dance Festival in Jakarta en op het FOG Festival op de Triënnale in Milaan. Taal
In de voorstelling wordt Farsi gesproken. Er is Nederlandse, Engelse en Farsi boventiteling. Een gedeelte van de interviews is niet te horen, maar alleen met boventiteling (Nederlands, Engels en Farsi) te lezen.
This performance is spoken in Farsi. There are Dutch, English and Farsi surtitles. Some of the interviews cannot be heard, but can only be read with surtitles (Dutch, English and Farsi).

How to dance when dancing is banned? 

In Iran, dancing has been officially prohibited since the start of the Islamitic Revolution. All dance companies have been forced to cease their activities. Many dancers and choreographers have fled abroad. Those who still live there have to be very resourceful. How are they keeping their art form alive? Theatre maker Nastaran Razawi Khorasani presents This is not a dance, a dance performance that deals with censorship. What can be shown, what must remain hidden? As the music and lights build towards a frenzy, Nastaran attempts to keep her dancing body in check. 

In This is not a dance, Nastaran brings the voices of choreographers and dancers living in Iran to the stage. How are they dealing with the ban on dance? How do they practice their profession, what dangers do they face, what freedoms are they fighting for? This is not a dance is a tribute to the body that wants to move. A tribute to art that simply must be made, in whatever way, shape or form.

About Nastaran

Nastaran Razawi Khorasani is a graduate of Maastricht Institute of Performative Arts. With Songs for no one, Nastaran received the BNG Bank Theater award twice (2020 and 2021). The performance was selected for the Flemish TheaterFestival 2022 and Theater der Welt in Frankfurt-Offenbach 2023. In 2023, Nastaran was nominated for the Gieskes-Strijbis Podium Prize. This is not a dance has been nominated for the VSCD Mime/Performance Prize 2024. Nastaran's work is shown both nationally and internationally, including at the Transform Festival in Leeds, Theater Commons Tokyo, the Indonesian Dance Festival in Jakarta and at the FOG Festival at the Triennale in Milan.
