Choreographer Shailesh Bahoran explores the origins of Surinamese culture in a population consisting of Creoles, Hindustanis, Chinese, Javanese, indigenous Kalinya's and Lokono's, Jews, and Dutch, making it challenging to define a true Surinamese identity.

The term "creolization" is used to describe the blending of different cultures that subsequently merge. How can a new culture, rich in practice, community spirit, and energy, emerge from a shared negative history? Bahoran, recently nominated for a Swan award, sees hip-hop culture as an example. It, too, originated from various ethnic and cultural backgrounds, evolving into an exceptionally versatile culture.

In "CREOLE," choreographer Shailesh Bahoran explores the concept of creolization by immersing himself in the culture of his home country. Suriname's fertile ground has been the stage for centuries of endless exchanges between diverse cultures. Customs and traditions from Africa, America, Asia, and Europe have melded over the years into a powerful culture full of energy and connecting force.

In "CREOLE," Shailesh collaborates with dancers reflecting the diverse background of Surinamese culture, both artistically, ethnically, and culturally. In an energetic and captivating dance performance, they take creolization as an artistic starting point. Equipped with the DNA of their ancestors and an open perspective, they explore the interaction that brought them together, the impact it has on the present, and the endless possibilities in the future.

What is Creolization, and when is someone considered a Creole and why?

During this extra program, we aim to make Creolization tangible by allowing you to experience the exchange of different cultures through snacks, drinks, music, clothing, and wisdom. Even if you don't attend the performance, you are more than welcome!

Before the performance begins, Dr. Aminata Cairo, Lector Social Justice and Diversity, will discuss Creolization from her expertise. She can make these scientific research themes understandable for everyone. (This talk is in Dutch). 

After the performance, there is a tasting prepared by Chef Emmo Achthoven. He has incorporated the theme into a selection of small Surinamese snacks and will briefly talk about them.

Additionally, there are food stands by Howard Komproe (Komproeven) selling his Surinamese sausage rolls based on the Dutch Brabantian sausage rolls. He also sells his sauces and well-known liqueurs Soete Boi and Stauwte.

Tailors and Wearers are taking care of the fashion stands by selling Surinamese Angisa's (headscarves) and shoulder cloths.

We end the evening with DJ Cutnice; he will play a set connecting Surinamese music and HipHop, so get ready to dance!"
