“Where is the other?”

How are subjectivities being constructed in today’s world?

Every time you go online, your profile is refined and returned to you as your identity. Contemporary subjectivities are being shaped by these projections, as subjectivity is formed in relation to the other. The "other" here is Al, which delivers summaries and stereotyped knowledge, like a hall of mirrors reflecting endlessly, yet with each reflection, the image is gradually reduced.   Each of us carries a fascinating, contradictory universe, far more complex than any identity label. The piece embraces a maximalist approach to interpretation, form, and affect—rooted in the richness of Brazilian culture.  We exacerbate the existence of the other through the act of devouring one another — physically, symbolically, emotionally. 

About Alice Ripoll

Alice Ripoll is a Brazilian choreographer and director acclaimed for her work at the intersection of contemporary dance and urban dance styles from Brazil. Through research, the work opens space for the dancers to transform the experiences and memories that live in each one, into images. Currently she’s directing two groups. Cia. REC and Cia. SUAVE. 

Cia. REC. Founded in 2009, Cia REC is a powerful group of dancers from the Favelas in Rio de Janeiro that elaborates and recreates contemporary art. Their work is on the threshold of dance and performance. It often questions the political and social situation in their home country. The experiences and memories of the dancers are used to create socially relevant performances that are not only aesthetically strong, but also leave a lasting impression on the audience. With Cia REC, Alice Ripoll created the performance aCORdo in 2017. In 2021, LAVAGEM premiered. Here, reality and fantasy mingle in a delirium that reminds us of an apocalyptic dream. 

Cia. SUAVE began with the creation of Suave, which premiered at the Panorama Festival in 2014. Having as inspiration the passinho (short step), a new style of urban dance that derived from Rio de Janeiro’s funk, the show stands out for its unique energy, the quality of its performers and the refinement of the structure created by the choreographer. The second performance of the group, CRIA, premiered in 2017. Inspired by the Dancinha (little dance), a derivation from passinho dance, the performance explores a mixture of affection and sensuality through the interweaving of funk with contemporary dance. In 2023, Zona Franca premiered at the Festival de Marseille. This creation weaves together contact dance, TikTok, Afro-house and passinho. “Free zone”, freedom, is the central theme in Zona Franca. Alice’s works has been presented at major festivals and theaters in Brazil, Europe, North America, and Asia.  

 

Elke keer dat je online gaat, wordt je profiel verfijnd en aan je teruggegeven als jouw identiteit. Hedendaagse subjectiviteiten worden gevormd door deze projecties, want subjectiviteit ontstaat altijd in relatie tot de ander. Die “ander” is hier AI: een systeem dat samenvattingen en gestandaardiseerde kennis levert, als een spiegelpaleis waarin het beeld eindeloos wordt weerkaatst — maar met elke reflectie wordt het beeld iets verder uitgehold.

In ieder van ons leeft een fascinerend, tegenstrijdig universum, veel complexer dan welk identiteitslabel ook. Dit werk omarmt een maximalistische benadering van interpretatie, vorm en affect — geworteld in de rijkdom van de Braziliaanse cultuur.
We vergroten het bestaan van de ander door de daad van het verslinden van elkaar — fysiek, symbolisch, emotioneel.

Over Alice Ripoll

Alice Ripoll is een Braziliaanse choreograaf en regisseur, bekend om haar werk op het snijvlak van hedendaagse dans en stedelijke dansstijlen uit Brazilië. Door middel van onderzoek creëert ze ruimte voor dansers om hun ervaringen en herinneringen te transformeren tot beelden. Ze is momenteel artistiek leider van twee gezelschappen: Cia. REC en Cia. SUAVE.

Cia. REC, opgericht in 2009, is een krachtig danscollectief uit de favelas van Rio de Janeiro dat hedendaagse kunst herschept en vormgeeft. Hun werk beweegt zich op de grens tussen dans en performance en stelt vaak politieke en maatschappelijke vraagstukken uit hun thuisland aan de orde. De ervaringen en herinneringen van de dansers worden ingezet om sociaal relevante voorstellingen te creëren die niet alleen esthetisch krachtig zijn, maar ook een blijvende indruk achterlaten bij het publiek. Met Cia. REC creëerde Alice Ripoll in 2017 de voorstelling aCORdo. In 2021 ging LAVAGEM in première — een werk waarin realiteit en fantasie samensmelten tot een koortsachtige droom vol apocalyptische beelden.

Cia. SUAVE begon met de creatie van Suave, dat in 2014 in première ging op het Panorama Festival. Geïnspireerd door de passinho (kort stapje), een nieuwe stedelijke dansstijl ontstaan uit de funk van Rio de Janeiro, valt de voorstelling op door haar unieke energie, de uitzonderlijke kwaliteit van de dansers en de verfijning van de structuur die de choreograaf heeft opgebouwd. De tweede voorstelling van het gezelschap, CRIA, ging in 2017 in première. Geïnspireerd door de dancinha (klein dansje), een afgeleide van de passinho, onderzoekt het werk een mengeling van affectie en sensualiteit door funk en hedendaagse dans met elkaar te verweven. In 2023 ging Zona Franca in première op het Festival de Marseille. Deze creatie verweeft contactimprovisatie, TikTok, Afro-house en passinho. “Vrije zone”, vrijheid, is het centrale thema in Zona Franca.
Alice’s werk werd gepresenteerd op toonaangevende festivals en in theaters in Brazilië, Europa, Noord-Amerika en Azië.
