Als mens verlangen we naar een lang leven. Medisch onderzoek en technologie lijken die wens voor ons in vervulling te laten gaan: We worden ouder en ouder en sommige mensen zijn ervan overtuigd dat we over niet al te lange tijd onsterfelijk kunnen worden.

In haar nieuwe voorstelling Eternity onderzoekt regisseuse Davy Pieters de betekenis van een eeuwig leven. Als je een paar honderd jaar oud zou zijn en ook nog eens een oneindige tijd voor je zou hebben, welke momenten in dat leven maken het leven daadwerkelijk waard?

In Eternity, waarin theater, mime, performance omlijst worden door het muzikaal decor van Jimi Zoet, zoomt Davy in op fragmenten uit een onsterfelijk leven, en is zo een ode aan die herinneringen, die enkele secondes die voorbij zijn gevlogen en die ons tegelijkertijd eeuwig bij zullen blijven.

Bij Theater Rotterdam maakte Davy eerder de voorstellingen The Unpleasant Surprise en How to Build a Universe; de eerste werd in 2018, samen met How did I die, geselecteerd voor De Biënnale van Venetië, en How to Build a Universe werd in 2019 bekroond met de prestigieuze VSCD Mimeprijs.

As humans beings we crave for a longer life. Medical research and technology seem to fulfill that wish for us: we are getting older and older, and some people are even convinced that we will become immortal in just a matter of time.

In her new production Eternity, director Davy Pieters explores the meaning of eternal life. If you were a few hundred years old, and you had an infinite time ahead of you, what moments had such an impact on you and thus made your life actually worthwhile?

In Eternity, in which theatre, mime, performance are framed by the musical backdrop of Jimi Zoet, Davy zooms in on fragments from an immortal life. It is an ode to those memories, to those few seconds that have flown by, and that are eternal at the same time. 

BIOGRAPHY DAVY PIETERS
The performances directed by Davy Pieters (1988) are explorations of the future human beings, and the way they are influenced by technical innovation and visual culture. Her productions are characterized by her dominantly visual, physical and cinematic style.

Davy graduated in 2011 from the directing course at the Maastricht Academy of Performing Arts. She was awarded the De Henriette Hustinxprijs for Excellent Talent for this graduation piece. “She develops her projects on the intersection of theatre and performance with the courage to experiment”, said the jury about her work. Davy produced several productions with Frascati Productions between 2012 until 2016.

Her first work was the hilarious, horrific fairy tale An Elephant (2012). Davy went on to create the highly-praised monologue The Truth About Kate (2014), which was selected for the National Dutch Theatre Festival and Circuit X in Flanders, and brought her a nomination for the BNG Nieuwe Theatermakersprijs Award. This was followed by How did I die (2014), and Made in Here (2016). How did I die won the Audience Award at the Fast Forward Festival for Young Directors in Braunschweig (Germany) in 2016. In the summer of 2016, Davy produced Re-enactment of the Now with Theater Utrecht.

Theater Rotterdam became Davy’s new home in 2017, where she previously made the performances The Unpleasant Surprise and How to Build a Universe: the first one was, together with How did I die, selected for La Biennale di Venezia in 2018, and the latter one received the prestigious VSCD Mime Award 2019.
