Pain Against Fear

Na het succes van de theatrale concerten gebaseerd op het werk van Sarah Kane (The SK Concert - 2018) en Heiner Müller (The HM Concert - 2019), slaat PERMANENT DESTRUCTION een nieuwe weg in. In het laatste deel van haar trilogie, Pain Against Fear, legt theatermaker en performer Naomi Velissariou haar maskers af en gaat de confrontatie aan met zichzelf en haar publiek. Daar waar in de eerste twee delen de haat in al zijn vormen centraal stond (zelfhaat, vrouwenhaat, mannenhaat en haat voor het leven), is het derde deel een poging om af te rekenen met angst als voedingsbodem voor die haat.

In Pain Against Fear gaat een persoonlijke openbaring gepaard met een uitnodiging aan het adres van het publiek. Een uitnodiging om je eigen angst te bezweren door hem samen met anderen te vieren, door collectief te dansen op het ritme van je individuele pijn. In de rotsvaste overtuiging dat de acceptatie van pijn ons lijden kan verzachten. Pain Against Fear is mindfulness on speed. De muziek is een meedogenloze mix van de strakke sound van producer Joost Maaskant en Velissariou’s hardnekkige poging tot kwetsbaarheid.

PERMANENT DESTRUCTION is zowel de titel van een post-dystopisch muziektheaterdrieluik als de naam van een band, waarin Velissariou en Maaskant af willen rekenen met een aantal taboes uit de huidige beeldcultuur. Sentimenten als zelfhaat en faalangst zijn in die cultuur te mijden thema’s, omdat ze niet sexy of Instagram-waardig zijn. Je kunt jezelf nu eenmaal niet profileren aan de hand van uitingen van pijn. Of wel?

In 2019 won Naomi Velissariou de Regieprijs voor The SK Concert. De voorstelling werd geselecteerd voor de Officiële Juryselectie van zowel het Nederlandse Theater Festival als het Vlaamse Theaterfestival. In 2020 werd Naomi genomineerd voor de Gieskes-Strijbis Podiumprijs.

Following the success of the theatrical concerts based on the work of Sarah Kane (The SK Concert – 2018) and Heiner Müller (The HM Concert – 2019), PERMANENT DESTRUCTION is taking a new approach. In the last part of her triptych, Pain Against Fear, Naomi Velissariou takes off all masks and confronts both herself and her audience. Whereas the first two parts were centered around hatred in all its manifestations (self-hatred, misogyny, hatred of life), the third and final part is an attempt to overcome fear as a breeding ground for that hatred. Pain Against Fear is mindfulness on speed. The music is a merciless mix of the ear-splitting sound of Joost Maaskant and Velissariou’s headstrong attempt at vulnerability. 

In Pain Against Fear personal revelations are accompanied by an invitation to the audience. An invitation to eradicate your fear by raving to the rhythm of your pain. In the passionate belief that the acceptance of pain can ease our suffering.

PERMANENT DESTRUCTION is both the title to a post-dystopian musical theater triptych and the name of a band, in which actor and director Naomi Velissariou and sound producer Joost Maaskant wish to get rid of a number of taboos that define our current image culture. Sentiments like self-hatred and fear of failure are to be avoided in this culture because they aren’t sexy or Instagram-worthy. After all, you can’t brand yourself by expressing your pain. Or can you?
