An international co-production set to the music of Pēteris Vasks, exploring the eternal dynamics of opposing forces.
What can art offer in a time marked by growing confusion and a loss of orientation? Brazilian choreographer Samir Calixto addresses this question by creating performances that zoom out, seeking a broader perspective that reveals the bigger picture and the deeper connections between things. It is an approach that offers hope and consolation, while also pointing to the responsibilities that come with our interconnectedness.
In SUMMA, created in 2018 in collaboration with Cello Octet Amsterdam, Calixto used the compositions of Arvo Pärt to take stock of a world out of balance. Nine years later, this collaboration continues with a new production set to the music of another Baltic composer: the Latvian-born Pēteris Vasks, widely regarded as one of Europe’s most influential and celebrated contemporary composers.
Vasks’ compositions are a musical reflection on the dynamics of opposing forces, from the endless rhythm of the tides to the perpetual oscillation between high and low, sacred and secular, good and evil. In a world increasingly defined by polarisation, this work invites us to embrace a more nuanced understanding of contradiction and coexistence.
For DESCENT※ASCENT, the eight musicians of Cello Octet Amsterdam share the stage with dancers from the prestigious German dance company Of Curious Nature, for whom Calixto has previously created several acclaimed works. The result is a performance in which music and dance merge into a ritualistic experience: a collective encounter where audience and performers become one, seeking to reconcile the paradoxes of human existence together.
Wat kan kunst betekenen voor de toenemende verwarring en het oriëntatieverlies in onze tijd? De Braziliaanse choreograaf Samir Calixto beantwoordt deze vraag door voorstellingen te maken die uitzoomen, op zoek naar een breder perspectief dat het grotere geheel en de diepere samenhangen laat zien. Het is een benadering die hoop en troost biedt, maar ook wijst op de verantwoordelijkheden die die verbondenheid met zich meebrengt.
In de voorstelling SUMMA, die hij in 2018 in samenwerking met het Cello Octet Amsterdam creëerde, werd op basis van composities van Arvo Pärt de balans opgemaakt van een uit balans geraakte wereld. Negen jaar later wordt de samenwerking voortgezet met een voorstelling op muziek van een andere Baltische componist, de uit Letland afkomstige Pēteris Vásks, die geldt als een van de meest invloedrijke en gelauwerde Europese hedendaagse componisten. Vasks’ composities vormen een muzikale reflectie op de dynamiek van tegengestelde krachten, zoals de eeuwige herhaling van de getijden of de onstuitbare oscillatie tussen hoger en lager, het heilige en het wereldse, goed en kwaad. Juist in een wereld die steeds extremer polariseert, is het van belang om de omgang met tegenstellingen te nuanceren.
Voor DESCENT※ASCENT zullen de acht cellisten van het Cello Octet Amsterdam het podium delen met dansers van het prestigieuze Duitse dansgezelschap Of Curious Nature, waarvoor Calixto eerder succesvolle stukken heeft gecreëerd. Het is een werk waarin de versmelting van de disciplines het publiek de ervaring van een ritueel biedt, een collectieve ontmoeting waarin publiek en artiesten één zijn en proberen hun eigen menselijke paradoxen met elkaar te verzoenen.
