There is something wrong with the way we speak — a lack of softness and openness. Or perhaps it is not about the words themselves, but about who gets to take them, hold them, and fill the space with them. In Feminine Frequencies, theatre maker Yannick Noomen confronts his own tendency to take up space.
In co-production with Jam Factory Art Center in Ukraine, Nineties builds a radio studio on stage. As the show’s host, Yannick tunes into a different frequency and makes room for another kind of voice. In a country where men stand on the front line and women carry daily life, he searches for voices that are rarely given bandwidth: feminine thinkers, activists, artists, queer soldiers, and women who keep the country running. Together with his musical sidekick, Berlin-based composer and producer Philipp Johann Thimm (Apparat), he explores the airwaves.
What feminine forces emerge when patriarchal structures begin to falter? Why is femininity still seen as vulnerable, when it is precisely there that new possibilities lie? And how does intersectional femininity endure in times of large-scale international crisis? Feminine Frequencies is a sensory performance about listening as an act of resistance, and about a man holding a microphone, trying to become less of a transmission tower and more of a receiver.

In co-productie met Jam Factory Arts Center in Oekraïne, bouwt Nineties een radiostudio op het toneel. Als showhost stemt Yannick af op een andere frequentie en maakt ruimte voor een ander geluid. In een land waar mannen aan het front staan en vrouwen het dagelijks leven dragen, gaat hij op zoek naar stemmen die maar weinig bandbreedte krijgen: feminiene denkers, activisten, kunstenaars, queer soldaten en vrouwen die het land draaiende houden. Samen met zijn muzikale sidekick, de Berlijnse componist en producer Philipp Johann Thimm (Apparat), verkent hij de ether.
Welke feminiene krachten komen naar voren als patriarchale structuren wankelen? Waarom wordt vrouwelijkheid nog steeds gezien als kwetsbaar, terwijl juist daar nieuwe mogelijkheden schuilen? En hoe houdt intersectionele femininiteit stand in deze tijden van grootschalige en internationale crisis? Feminine Frequencies is een zintuiglijke voorstelling over luisteren als daad van verzet, en over een man met een microfoon in zijn hand, die probeert minder zendmast te zijn en meer ontvangstpaal.
