OPEN CALL: Alice Ripoll

We are excited to welcome the Brazilian theater maker Alice Ripoll (Rio de Janeiro) as a guest at our festival Feeling Curious? Alice is a familiar face at European festivals, and during our event, she will be staying in Rotterdam for over a week. In addition to presenting two performances, she will also be leading a workshop for creators, dancers, and performers.

Alice's journey began after studying psychology, where she became inspired by the potential of the body and movement research (body, soul, and movement). She started her work in the favelas of Rio de Janeiro, where she founded two community-based groups: Cie. Suave and Cie. REC. Her unique style blends hip hop, samba, vogue, and other music and dance forms. Alice has also developed a distinctive method that draws from the personal stories and backgrounds of her performers, often addressing the realities of life in the favelas and the political situation in Brazil. She skillfully transforms these themes into poetic and visually striking performances.

This distinctive approach makes her work truly exceptional, and we are thrilled that she is eager to share her experiences with Dutch creators, dancers, and performers. Alice Ripoll is a significant contemporary artist who transforms current issues into artistic expressions that offer hope and inspiration. We are honored to have her at our festival.

This workshop is designed for creators, dancers, and performers who want to deepen their understanding of the creative process.

Alice will guide participants through the following key topics:

  • Scene Creation and Dramaturgy: Techniques for building compelling scenes and narratives in performance.
  • Insights from Creative Practice: Sharing personal methods and experiences in free association, creative freedom, and decision-making.
  • Safety within community: Fostering intimacy within the group and exploring connections with other bodies.
  • Composition and Improvisation: Engaging in exercises that enhance listening, responsiveness, and the use of time, space, and voice.
