It is 2025. We live in a year without summer. In a jump-scare reality that feels like an apocalyptic vision of our world thrown into darkness and stripped of certainty: Where survival becomes ritual and despair dances hand in hand with ecstasy.

Het is 2025. We leven in een jaar zonder zomer. In een schrikbarende werkelijkheid die aanvoelt als een apocalyptische visie op onze wereld: gehuld in duisternis en ontdaan van elke zekerheid. Een wereld waarin overleven een ritueel wordt en wanhoop hand in hand danst met extase.

In 1816, het oorspronkelijke ‘jaar zonder zomer’, barst de vulkaan Tambora in Indonesië uit. As vult de lucht, de zon verdwijnt, oogsten mislukken en de wereld lijdt honger. In datzelfde jaar verblijft de achttienjarige Mary aan het Meer van Genève met een groep dichters. De stormen en de duisternis inspireren hen om spookverhalen te vertellen. Mary bedenkt Frankenstein: het verhaal van een wetenschappelijk genie dat de natuur naar zijn hand probeert te zetten en uiteindelijk ten onder gaat aan het monster dat hij uit lichaamsdelen van doden heeft samengesteld.

Florentina Holzinger en haar cast onderzoeken de verhalen die we vertellen over onze omgeving, onze lichamen, gezondheid, verval en identiteit. Van de 21e-eeuwse obsessie met een langer leven en medische beloften tot de gevaren van ongeremde technologische vooruitgang in een wereld gevormd door AI, robotica en bio-engineering. A Year without Summer eigent zich deze drang toe om de natuur te verbeteren tot het punt van perversie en plaatst de belofte van eeuwig leven tegenover de onvermijdelijkheid van de dood.

In 1816, the original "year without summer“, Mount Tambora erupts in Indonesia, ashes fill the sky, the sun disappears, crops fail, and the world hungers. That same year, 18-year-old Mary stays by Lake Geneva with other poets, where storm and darkness inspire them to tell ghost stories. Mary imagines Frankenstein, a genius of science, who forces nature to bend to his will and ends up in destruction with his monster assembled from corpses‘ parts. 

Florentina Holzinger and cast explore the stories we tell about our environment, bodies, health, decay and identities: The 21st century pursuit of longevity, medical promises to the perils of unchecked technological growth in a world shaped by AI, robotics, and bioengineering. A Year without Summer appropriates this attempt to improve nature to the point of perversion and plays off the promise of eternal life against the certainty of death.

Florentina Holzinger:

"Ik probeer na te denken over wat ons ertoe brengt om de dingen te doen die we in onze voorstellingen doen. Vaak zijn dat slechts illusies. Ik ben altijd geïnteresseerd geweest in het theater als een echt driedimensionale ruimte: niet alleen de vloer benutten, maar alle dimensies van die ruimte innemen. Ik ben gefascineerd door theatermachinerie, die vaak helemaal niet hedendaags is. Denk aan special effects: in films, met virtuele of kunstmatige realiteit, zijn die veel verfijnder. In het theater zijn ze nog steeds heel analoog, en dat spreekt me juist aan. Er zit een bijna vintage aspect aan waar ik me toe aangetrokken voel. Ik geniet ervan om gebruik te maken van theatertechniek die zo basaal is: iemand gaat zichtbaar met een touw omhoog en omlaag. Het is geen perfecte illusie."

“I try to think about what leads us to do the things we do in our performances. Often these are just illusions. I was always interested in using the theater as a very three-dimensional space, not just making use of the floor, but occupying all of its dimensions. I am fascinated by theater machinery‚ which is often not contemporary at all. Think about special effects: In movies, with virtual or artificial reality, they are much more refined. In theater, they’re still very analog, which I like. There is an almost vintage aspect that I’m attracted to. I’m really into indulging in theater machinery that is so basic: Somebody goes clearly up and down with a rope. It’s not a perfect illusion.”
