On an almost empty stage, four dancers and two musicians return to the essentials. To what remains when everything else is stripped away: the body, the voice, and one another. In Howling Road, they search together for a place to land. Duos waltz like a whirlwind within a single square metre, their feet striking a rhythm that grows into a polyphonic song. Howling Road is a passionate act of resistance and an exercise in connection. A reminder of the richness and resilience that reside within the body itself. Through powerful partner work and choral singing, Howling Road paints the picture of a group learning to rely on themselves and on each other.
For Howling Road, De Dansers collaborate with Amsterdam-based songwriter and singer Pitou Nicolaes, whose music is characterised by her enchanting, multi-layered voice and idiosyncratic compositions. In this way, the performance becomes a hopeful echo for a world in which we may have less, yet need one another all the more.
About The Dansers
A dynamic collective of dancers and musicians from Utrecht, led by choreographer and dancer Josephine van Rheenen and composer and musician Guy Corneille. De Dansers believe that true connection begins in the body. In a world increasingly mediated through screens, we create physical, musical performances that give the body a voice. The're dance concerts — equal encounters between contemporary dance and live music — are raw, intuitive, and immersive.
Performances by De Dansers tell accessible, intuitively compelling stories about liberation and surrender, in which playful anarchism is never far away. They loosen what has become stuck, or slow down where attention is needed. They work with rhythm, touch, and surrender, creating art that lifts you out of the everyday. For children, whose imagination is still stronger than logic and for whom movement is second nature. And for adults, whose bodies may sometimes have forgotten what they once knew — what it feels like to fall, to connect, to play, to live.
About the choreographer
Josephine van Rheenen (1988) studied Dance Education at the Amsterdam School of the Arts and began performing with De Dansers while still a student. After five years on stage with companies including De Dansers, Vloeistof, and Breekgoed, she succeeded Wies Merkx together with Guy Corneille as artistic director of De Dansers in 2014. Since then, she has created original work for both children and adults. As a choreographer, Josephine searches for humanity within dance and strives for an intuitive movement language rooted in instinct. Openness, surrender, and interaction are central themes in her work.
About the composer and performer
Guy Corneille (1990) has been co-artistic director of De Dansers alongside Josephine van Rheenen since 2014. In performances, he moves across the stage simultaneously as a (self-taught) singer/musician and physical performer/dancer. He also co-creates with choreographer Josephine van Rheenen as composer and music dramaturge. Guy has an academic background in socio-cultural anthropology and a history in the pop music scene with his indie band La Corneille. His artistic interests lie in songs with expressionist-poetic lyrics, the casual performativity of pop concerts, and work that remains accessible without becoming superficial or cheap.
Op een bijna leeg toneel keren vier dansers en twee muzikanten terug naar de basis. Naar wat overblijft wanneer alles wordt weggenomen: het lichaam, de stem en elkaar. In Howling Road zoeken ze samen naar een plek om te landen. Duo’s walsen als een wervelwind op één vierkante meter, hun voeten slaan een ritme dat uitgroeit tot een meerstemmig lied. Howling Road is een hartstochtelijk verzet en een oefening in verbinden. Een herinnering aan de rijkdom en de veerkracht die in het lichaam zelf schuilt. Met krachtig partnerwerk en koorzang schetst Howling Road het beeld van een groep die leert vertrouwen op zichzelf en elkaar.
Voor Howling Road werken De Dansers samen met de Amsterdamse songwriter en zangeres Pitou Nicolaes, wiens muziek wordt gekarakteriseerd door haar betoverende, veelkleurige stem en eigenzinnige composities. Zo wordt de voorstelling een hoopvolle echo voor een wereld waarin we misschien minder hebben, maar elkaar des te meer nodig zullen hebben.
Over de Dansers
Een bewegelijke band van dansers en muzikanten uit Utrecht, onder leiding van choreograaf en danser Josephine van Rheenen en componist en muzikant Guy Corneille. De Dansers geloven dat echte verbinding begint in het lijf. In een wereld die steeds meer uit schermen bestaat, maken wij fysieke, muzikale voorstellingen die je lijf aan het woord laten. De dansconcerten, gelijkwaardig samenkomsten van moderne dans en livemuziek, zijn rauw, intuïtief en meeslepend.
Voorstellingen van De Dansers vertellen toegankelijke, intuïtief meeslepende verhalen over bevrijding en overgave, waarin speels anarchisme nooit ver te zoeken is. Ze schudden los wat vast is of verstillen daar waar aandacht nodig is. Ze werken met ritme, aanraking en overgave, en maken kunst die je optilt uit het alledaagse. Voor kinderen, bij wie verbeelding nog sterker is dan logica en beweging vanzelf spreekt En voor volwassenen, bij wie het lichaam soms is vergeten wat het ooit wist, hoe het voelt om te vallen, te raken, te spelen, te leven.
Over de choreograaf
Josephine van Rheenen (1988) volgde de opleiding Docent Dans aan de Theaterschool Amsterdam en begon tijdens haar studie als danser bij De Dansers. Na vijf jaar op het podium te hebben gestaan bij onder andere de gezelschappen De Dansers, Vloeistof en Breekgoed volgde zij in 2014 samen met Guy Corneille, Wies Merkx op als artistieke leiding van De Dansers. Sindsdien maakt zij voor De Dansers eigen werk voor zowel kinderen als volwassenen. Als choreograaf zoekt Josephine naar de menselijkheid in de dans en streeft ze naar een intuïtieve danstaal, die vertrekt vanuit instincten. Openheid, overgave en interactie zijn kernwoorden in haar werk.
Over de componist en performer
Guy Corneille (1990) is sinds 2014 samen met Josephine van Rheenen artistiek leider van De Dansers. In de voorstellingen springt hij over het podium als tegelijkertijd (autodidact) zanger/muzikant en fysiek performer/danser. Bovendien co-creëert hij met choreograaf Josephine van Rheenen als componist en muziek gericht dramaturg. Guy heeft een academische achtergrond in socio culturele antropologie en een geschiedenis in het popcircuit met zijn indieband La Corneille. Zijn artistieke interesse gaat uit naar songs met expressionistisch-poëtische songteksten; de nonchalante performativiteit van popconcerten; en werk dat toegankelijk is zonder oppervlakkig of goedkoop te zijn.
